This illustration represents a reinterpretation of Japanese artist Hokusai‘s iconic work, The Great Wave of Kanagawa. This print is part of a series called “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji” and is considered one of the most famous in the history of Japanese art.

The work was created in the 19th century, at a time when Japan was becoming increasingly open to the Western world. The giant wave that occupies the center of the image has become a symbol of the brute force of nature, while the boats nearby seem to be in imminent danger.

The unique perspective of the work, which immerses the viewer in the action and gives the impression of being on the boat facing the wave, has been hailed as an example of traditional Japanese art. However, the precision of the details, especially the depiction of the waves, has also been admired by Western artists who have discovered the work over time.

With this re-adaptation, illustrator Lotza has brought her own interpretation of the work, while retaining the aesthetic and iconic character of the original. This poster is therefore both a tribute to a historical work of art and an original creation in itself.
