It is the prefecture of the Charente and is also the seat of the canton of Angoulême. Angoulême is famous for its historical and cultural heritage, with many historical buildings such as the Cathedral of St Peter of Angoulême, the Castle of Angoulême and the Museum of Angoulême.
The city is also known for its International Comics Festival, which takes place every January and attracts thousands of visitors. Angoulême is also an important centre for the printing and paper industry, with many companies in these sectors based in the region.
Finally, Angoulême is also a popular destination for wine lovers, as it is located in the Cognac wine region. Local wines include cognac, Pineau des Charentes and dry white wine from Entre-deux-Mers.
