Postcard Badminton

Badminton is a racquet sport played indoors, where two players (singles) or two pairs (doubles) compete by passing a shuttlecock over a net. The objective of the game is to get the shuttlecock into the opponent’s court without it touching the ground in your own court. The origins of badminton go back to ancient India, where the game was called “Poona”. Players used wooden rackets and a feather ball. The game became popular in England in the late 19th century, where it was played in gardens and parks. It was there that the use of a feather shuttlecock, which was lighter and easier to handle than the ball, began.
In 1873, the Duke of Beaufort introduced the game to his estate at Badminton House in Gloucestershire, England, where it was played in a practice hall converted into a badminton court. This is where the name badminton came from. The sport quickly spread to the British aristocracy before becoming popular with the general public. The first national championship was held in 1899 in England, and badminton became an Olympic sport in 1992 in Barcelona.
Today, badminton is played all over the world, both recreationally and competitively, and has a large following due to its ease of access and numerous health benefits.
