Postcard Charente-Maritime

The carrelet is an important part of the fishing history of Charente-Maritime. These small fishermen’s huts are built on stilts and are used to catch fish such as eels, sole and mullet. The fishermen use a square-shaped net that they lower and raise with a pulley system to catch the fish.

Beyond fishing, Charente-Maritime is also known for its local gastronomy, including fresh seafood, oysters and mussels. Visitors can enjoy many activities, such as visiting the famous Vauban fortifications in Saint-Martin-de-Ré, exploring the beaches of the island of Oleron or visiting the picturesque villages of the region.
